Complete Episodes/Clips/Etc. List

by Andrew Cloninger

Given the amount of disinformation, and general lack of precise
information, I took it upon myself to attempt to remedy the situation by
assembling a list of EVERY LAST clip and bit and piece that exists of the
Hartnell and Troughton Eras. I know that there will be oversights and
incorrect information here, so I post in the hopes that the VAST RADW
audience will flood me with corrections and clarifications.

Following this post, the list will be available on my WWW page, as soon as
I figure out where it will be...

So now, we begin...

As there always seems to be some confusion as to the EXACT contents of the
Archives, this is my attempt to put together an up-to-date and complete
list of exactly what bits and pieces of the first 2 Doctors exist.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First Doctor - Willian Hartnell
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A - An Unearthly Child (1,000,000 BC) whatever... (4 Episodes)

Exists complete on 16mm film. The originally untransmitted Pilot also
exists, in addition to 3 different "takes" of the second half of the first
episode (inside the TARDIS), 1 of which is included in the HARTNELL YEARS
tape, and another of which was broadcast on BBC2 on the 26th of August,
1992.

B - The Daleks (7 Episodes)

Complete on 16mm film

C - The Edge of Destruction (Inside the Spaceship) (2 Episodes)

Complete on 16mm, with Arabic/Spanish versions of episode 1, and an Arabic
version of episode 2 also existing in the Archives.

D - Marco Polo (7 Episodes)

None of these exist at the BBC, although a large variety of color stills
were taken on the set, in addition to some off-screen stills. A complete
audio recording of all 7 episodes was recently returned to the BBC by fan
David Holman.

E - The Keys of Marinus (6 Episodes)

All 6 exist on 16mm, with an Arabic version of the 1st episode also
existing.

F - The Aztecs (4 Episodes)

All 4 exist on 16mm

G - The Sensorites (6 Episodes)

All 6 exist on 16mm

H - The Reign of Terror (6 Episodes)

Episodes 1,2,3 and 6 exist on 16mm in the Archives, and were planned for
release (with linking footage by Carole Ann Ford), though this appears to
have been permanently shelved. Also existing are several clips (silent,
on Super8 film) from the missing episodes 4 and 5 (totalling just over
1:00 in length). In addition, audio recordings of episodes 4 and 5 were
also recently returned to the BBC by David Holman.

J - Planet of Giants (3 Episodes)

All 3 exist on 16mm, with episodes 2 and 3 also existing in Arabic.

K - The Dalek Invasion of Earth (6 Episodes)

All 6 exist on 16mm, with episode 5 also existing on 35mm monochrome film.
Arabic versions of episodes 1 and 6 also exist, in addition to 2
BBC-transmitted trailers (one ~:57, the other ~:30).

L - The Rescue (2 Episodes)

Both exist on 16mm

M - The Romans (4 Episodes)

All exist on 16mm

N - The Web Planet (6 Episodes)

All 6 exist on 16mm, in addition to an overseas version of episode 1 which
does not have the reprise from THE ROMANS. Episode 6 also exists as an
overseas version with the caption "NEXT EPISODE - THE SPACE MUSEUM" (as
opposed to "NEXT EPISODE - THE LION").

P - The Crusade (4 Episodes)

Only episode 3 exists on 16mm film (as released on THE HARTNELL YEARS),
although an audio recording of the entire story was recently returned to
the BBC by David Holman. (Update Jan, 1999 - episode 1 has been found
and returned to the BBC!)

Q - The Space Museum (4 Episodes)

All 4 exist on 16mm.

R - The Chase (6 Episodes)

All 6 exist on 16mm.

S - The Time Meddler (4 Episodes)

All 4 exist on 16mm, although episode 1 is missing several seconds from a
scene where Vikings get stabbed by Saxons.

None exist at the BBC, although a :30 clip (from a telerecording) was used
at part of "The Lively Arts: Whose Doctor Who" originally transmitted 3
April 1977 (and recently rebroadcast). There have been many rumours
surrounding the existance of a ~6:00 clip (episode unknown) held in
private hands, but this does not exist at the BBC. In addition to a :18
silent Super8 clip (from the beginning of episode 1), an audiorecording of
the entire story was recently return to the Archives by David Holman.

T/A (DC) - Mission To the Unknown (Dalek Cutaway) (1 Episode)

Does not exist, although a complete audiorecording was supposedly returned
to the BBC by David Holman (this writer has yet to hear the recording).

have existed in private hands for many years. The complete audiorecording
was recently returned to the BBC by David Holman.

Episodes 5 and 10 exist on 16mm (both having been released on DALEKS: THE
EARLY YEARS)

A complete audiorecording of the story has existed in fan circles for some
time, although the beginning of episode 1 and the end of episode 7 were
incomplete. A complete audiorecording was supposedly recently returned to
the BBC by David Holman (although the writer has not heard this
recording). Higher quality audiorecordings of episodes 8, 9, 10 and 12
were also returned by Graham Strong.

None exist in the Archives, although a complete audiorecording was
returned to the Archives by Graham Strong.

Only episode 4 remains (as released on THE HARTNELL YEARS) and it is
missing its "NEXT EPISODE" caption. A complete audiorecording was
supposedly recently returned to the BBC by David Holman (though this

including Steven's goodbye) in addition to the complete audiorecording
returned to the BBC by Graham Strong.

and battle scenes. In addition, a small spool (containing material not
used in the finished program) exists of footage of the Post Office Tower
and a War Machine on location.

None exist, though director Gerald Blake's behind-the-scenes home movie
footage (2:45) does exist. In addition, DWM has published John Cura's
telesnaps of all 4 episodes. Complete audiorecordings have been returned
to the Archives by Graham Strong.

DD - The Tenth Planet (4 Episodes)

All but episode 4 exist, with the Cura telesnaps of episode 4 having been
published in DWM. Additionally, the regeneration sequence exists in 2
forms: 1) the :26 segment broadcast on the November 5, 1973 edition of
BLUE PETER and 2) a sequence of several clips (all from episode 4) which
cover nearly the entire scene inside the TARDIS leading up to the
regeneration. A complete audiorecording of the entire story has been
returned to the BBC (allowing them to remaster the soundtrack of episode
2) by Graham Strong.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton

EE - The Power of the Daleks (6 Episodes)

No episodes exist, although the Cura telesnaps have been published twice

complete photovideo of the entire story. A newer, complete audiorecording

Additionally, silent Super8 footage (:58, from episodes 1 and 2) exists,
athough it appears that the BBC does not hold copies of this material.
