SECTION ZERO - THIS FAQ AND SOME INFORMATION TO HELP YOU READ IT
(with apologies to Douglas Adams for misquoting Hitchhiker.)

0.1 So What's this FAQ all about?

After the apparent `death' of the original series of DOCTOR WHO,
several independent production groups sprang up to fill the gap with
WHO-based or WHO-similar films. As more and more of these films were
made the number of questions about them on the internet have increased.
Thus this FAQ was created to answer those questions.
More recently some of these groups have moved into audio productions
and these too have been added to the FAQ's remit.
The "ALTERNATIVE" WHO FAQ deals solely with the fictional alternatives
to the original series, therefore documentary and interview material is
not included except where it is directly related to the productions
detailed here. (Which is why BBV's BIDDING ADIEU isn't mentioned anywhere
     but here.)

The productions mentioned here are also classed as semi-professional
so, unless there are sufficient requests, fan produced videos and
audio's (e.g. AUDIO VISUALS, HELICAL SCAN, EVERLASTING FILMS, TIME RIFT
etc.) will not be included. (In fact, there are so many of these now
that they probably deserve an FAQ of their own.)

As with most files of this type, it is an ongoing piece of work. If a
mistake is made or a piece of info is forgotten, please pass it on to
     me.

SECTION ONE - BBV PRODUCTIONS

  1.1 Who are BBV PRODUCTIONS?

BBV (which stands for BILL and BEN VIDEOS, Ben being the nickname of
BILL BAGGS wife, HELEN) PRODUCTIONS are a small film and audio
production company originally set up under the aegis of the BBC FILM
CLUB in 1991 and is owned and managed by BILL BAGGS. They have so far
specialised in Telefantasy drama based on or inspired by the BBC
Television series DOCTOR WHO and has featured many members of the
cast and crew from the series. The productions are very high quality
     considering the shoestring budget involved.
These films include THE STRANGER and P.R.O.B.E. series and THE AUTON
TRILOGY as well as one-off dramas and, more recently, audio dramas
     in a similar vein.

Their personnel include BBV's founder BILL BAGGS, NICHOLAS BRIGGS
(The Doctor from the AUDIO VISUAL series of DOCTOR WHO audio plays and
presenter of REELTIME PICTURES MYTHMAKERS interviews.) and MARK GATISS
(NEW ADVENTURES writer, Actor and Playwright)

Since 1996 BBV have been distributing their video productions direct
to High Street stores on the REELTIME PICTURES video label.

Further information about the history of BBV and its current work
can be found at their website: - http://www.bbv1.demon.co.uk

  1.2 Who is BILL BAGGS?

BILL BAGGS was the organiser of the Hampshire division of the DOCTOR
WHO APPRECIATION SOCIETY. Amongst his activities, at the tender age
of seventeen he organised a DOCTOR WHO convention. Another of the
projects he undertook in this role was a non-profit DOCTOR WHO audio
adventure, recorded on an old reel-to-reel tape machine. Written by
Bill himself, it was called "PLANET OF DOOM." Out of the success of
this first venture came the AUDIO VISUALS, what was to become a
series of twenty-eight dramas produced at first by BAGGS and later
by GARY RUSSELL when BILL gave up producing the AUDIO VISUALS in
1987. In 1986 he joined the BBC in London as a clerk, where he became
an active member of the BBC film club and organiser of the BBC theatre
club. 1987 saw him transfer to BBCTV Centre as an assistant picture
editor in the news and current affairs department before spending
three months as a video editor at the BBC's Birmingham studios, Pebble
Mill, where his education in compressing information into two, three
or ten minute slots helped his economic story-telling techniques.
Through the BBC Theatre Club BILL met with CHRISTIAN DARKIN who was
to write the first BBV production, "SUMMONED BY SHADOWS."

The rest, as they say, is history.

1.3 Who is THE STRANGER? (MAJOR SPOILERS!!!)

"The Estrangement programme... I was its first experimental subject. It
was a punishment designed to wipe out all memory of my past terrorist
crimes, but the past never stays dead for long. Now I had to decide,
Was I Soloman or.... The Stranger?"
The Stranger - "THE STRANGER CHRONICLES 1: THE FINAL MISSION"

When we first encounter THE STRANGER, we know virtually nothing about
him. The natives of the planet he is residing on merely call him `The
Man who Appeared'. He is a traveller, with a young female companion,
who has decided to shun contact with other people.

As time passes, we learn a little more about him and his companion
until the terrible truth is finally revealed. THE STRANGER, whose real
name is SOLOMAN was the leader of a terrorist cell in an on-going
interdimensional guerrilla war between his race, the Preceptors, and the
guardians of the multiverse, the Protectorate. During one assassination
mission he was captured by the Protectorate and, in exchange for the
freedom of his associates Egan and Saul, he underwent a reprogramming,
removing all memory of who he was. The Protectorate plan being that he
     would reform himself.

He is not a true humanoid. The Preceptors are a race of beings that
exist in a non-corporeal form between dimensions, in what they call the
Dimensional Web. SOLOMAN takes on his humanoid form when he is in real
     space.

  1.4 Who is COLIN BAKER?

COLIN BAKER was born in London in 1943. Acting while young, he made an
early appearance on Granada Television in "MY WIFE'S SISTER." He joined
the North Manchester Amateur Dramatics Society, but in the meantime, but
in the mean time trained as a solicitor. By the age of 23, he had
decided that he wanted to fully pursue an acting career, and went to
study at LAMDA. His chosen vocation began in earnest on May 12, 1969 at
the Arts Theatre, Cambridge in the play "PLAINTIFF IN A PRETTY HAT."
On television he appeared in "ROADS TO FREEDOM", "THE SILVER SWORD",
"THE ADVENTURES OF DON QUICK", and "WAR AND PEACE" - but found fame in
the mid-seventies BBC drama series "THE BROTHERS" in which he played
the unlikeable PAUL MERRONEY. COLIN has been married twice. First to
actress LIZA GODDARD and now actress MARION WYATT. After "THE BROTHERS"
COLIN went on to guest roles in "BLAKES 7", "JULIET BRAVO" and "DOCTOR
WHO." The latter leading to his casting in the lead role upon PETER
DAVISON'S departure. He continues to enjoy an extensive career in
radio, television and theatre, most recently including a succesful
tour in a stage adaptation of "KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS."

own identity, he submitted himself to a process which promised to
put "everything in its proper place".

But where is the Stranger's "proper place"? Just who is the
          Stranger?

After materialising in an alley behind a seedy night-club, the
Stranger begins piecing together his fragmented past. As the

Just to prove that the oddest mistakes do crop up occasionally,
even in the highest quality productions, I've been informed that
the 2nd Assistant Director on BOTP was incorrectly credited. Just
for the record, the 2nd Assistant Director on BOTP was MIKE
LAYCOCK, not MIKE LOCKWOOD as stated on the credits.
Recording took place between the 7th and 15th of May, 1997.

                   ELISABETH SLADEN as MARIS ALEXA
                   JOHN WADMORE as SAUL

II: "EYE OF THE STORM" by ARTHUR WALLIS
          (Approx. 60 mins)
          Released: ???? 1995
          Re-Release: January 1999 (CD)

Following the ending of BREACH OF THE PEACE, Egan, Saul and The
Stranger find themselves returned to earth and in deadly danger
from an experiment involving a young girl named Meta. In a
desperate bid to escape, Egan finally learns a few lessons about
          humans...

          Co-stars DAVID TROUGHTON as EGAN
                   JOHN WADMORE as SAUL
                   KAREN HENSON as META
                   AMANDA HURWITZ as SHEILA
                   DAVID TERRANCE as HUNTER

Believe-it-or-else department: ARTHUR WALLIS is a pseudonym for
NICHOLAS BRIGGS that dates back to his writing days on AUDIO
VISUALS and MYTHMAKERS. (In fact, for the AUDIO VISUALS tapes
NICK had been known to disguise his voice and be interviewed as
his alter-ego.) The name also crops up on the credits for
          "STRANGER THAN FICTION."
The reason for the use of the pseudonym is that the original script
was by SIMON MESSINGHAM, but it never really worked out. NICK was
asked to write a new script at the very last moment. NICK and BILL
weren't keen on NICK being credited for both scripts, so NICK used
his trusty pen-name - all very unclear last minute thinking really!
The 1999 re-release features extra material originally cut from the
original tape release because of time constraints.

Today, the horrific discovery of several oddly mutated bodies alerts
Liz Shaw and P.R.O.B.E. to the fact that something is stalking the

          very nature of humanity itself!

1.9 What is THE AUTON TRILOGY?

THE AUTON TRILOGY is a series of three linked films produced by BBV
in conjunction with REELTIME PICTURES and features the alien Nestene
consciousness which was originally featured in the "DOCTOR WHO" stories
"SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE" (1970) and "TERROR OF THE AUTONS" (1971) which
starred the late JON PERTWEE as THE DOCTOR.

The production of THE AUTON TRILOGY has seen a number of firsts for BBV
including the first filming in a studio and BILL BAGGS relinquishing
the directors chair to other people.

Part One of THE AUTON TRILOGY

"Your death certificates have already been prepared by UNIT..."

The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce was set up to tackle human
contact with the extraterrestrial and paranormal - especially when
that contact proved dangerous. But when the battles were over, when
the top-secret `clean-ups' had been completed, where was all the
          alien technology taken?

The Warehouse... UNIT's highly classified storage and research
establishment. Here lie the dead, forgotten relics of past battles
and encounters. But what happens when one of those relics is
          reactivated?

UNIT has only one way of dealing with its mistakes. The Containment
Team has been summoned... and the outcome is far from certain...

The writer/director NICHOLAS BRIGGS is well known to watchers of the
previous BBV productions, both as a writer and an actor. AUTON was
originally written as a sequel to REELTIME PICTURES "DOWNTIME" and
set to feature THE BRIGADIER, his daughter KATE and CAPTAIN CAVENDISH.
NICHOLAS COURTNEY had to drop out due to ill health and the script
was completely rewritten for a new set of characters.
The film has also been re-released on the REELTIME PICTURES label,
this time accompanied by a documentary, "THE MAKING OF AUTON."

BBV 17 - "AUTON 2: SENTINEL" by NICHOLAS BRIGGS

PETER FRANKUM, KEITH BURTON, ROBERT DUNLOP, CAROLINE
O'SULLIVAN, THOMAS O'SULLIVAN and ANDREW HASLEY
                        as VILLAGERS

A unique behind the scenes report featuring interviews
               with the Cast and crew.

Previously titled AUTON 2: THE RAPTURE.

Set two years after the original film, AUTON 2 director NICHOLAS
BRIGGS promises "more action and a slightly lighter touch" than the
first. Filming took place from May 9th and, unlike its predecessor,
          was recorded on location.

This is a different script to "IN THE BLOOD" (or "ACTIV-8" as NICK
titled it until he heard that was the name of a programme on
Childrens BBC) that was originally touted as the second part of the
AUTON trilogy. This tale of Autons and drug addiction proved unusable
when the original cast of the trilogy was changed. It would have been
written by newcomer TIM SAWARD (Based on a story by NICHOLAS BRIGGS)
and directed by BBC Restoration Team member, PAUL VANEZIS. This was
only in the planning stages for a matter of weeks - although TIM
managed to produce a couple of drafts during that time.
TIM SAWARD was later commissioned by BILL BAGGS to produce a new
sequel script based on the new characters, however this was dropped
as NICHOLAS BRIGGS holds the copyright on the characters of LOCKWOOD
and co and preferred to write the new script himself.
The full script to "IN THE BLOOD" is available from TIM SAWARD's
          website at http://www.bbv1.demon.co.uk/homepage.html

The 1999 re-release features documentary footage of the production

Professor and Ace decide to take a holiday, they are unwillingly
pitched into a battle for supremacy on the planet.

Separated and suddenly finding themselves on the lost and lonely
Isle of Prosperity, they must find each other. But standing in
their way is the determination of a mysterious figure from the
past to reclaim the Directorship of the planet. As the Professor
and Ace explore, a picture begins to emerge of a corrupt past,
of political double-dealing, betrayal and vengeance.

Who is Milo, the psychokinetic youth who inhabits the island?
Who is Gabriel, who sounds like a machine, but talks like a
schoolmaster? And who is the earthy Calida, and why is she out
          for revenge?

A dramatic meeting of old enemies can no longer be postponed,
and there is no way off the island!

 # 1.13 Who is THE WANDERER?

THE WANDERER is a space traveller who, during one particular
misadventure, lost his memory and was dubbed "FRED." After regaining
his memory he decided that after the many tragedies of his life it
was time for a new start and a new name, so "FRED" was adopted more
permanently. He travels in a ship that apparently doesn't look much
like a space ship. "FRED" is played by NICHOLAS BRIGGS.
(There are certain obvious similarities between "FRED" and THE DOCTOR
and there are certain references to the fan-made AUDIO VISUALS DOCTOR
WHO audio dramas (which featured NICK as THE DOCTOR) to suggest that
"FRED" and THE (AUDIO VISUALS) DOCTOR are one and the same.)

 # 1.14 What adventures feature THE WANDERER?

          (Approx. 60 mins)
          DIRECTED by NICHOLAS BRIGGS
          Released: November 1998

A Cyber War rages throughout the galaxy. The Earth-aligned worlds
are fighting for survival against the cold, emotionless might of the
Cyber Bloc - an alliance of planets whose inhabitants have undergone
cybernetic conversion in the name of racial superiority.
Award-winning journalist Olivia is reporting from the front-line,
when all her assumptions about the Cyber War are shattered, not only
by a terrifying encounter with the enemy, but by the arrival of a
wise and mysterious traveller. The result is a deadly Cyber-Hunt, in
which human and machine creature are tested to the limit and the
balance of galactic power is at stake.

          Co-Stars HELEN BANG as OLIVIA

                   DAVID SAX as CYBERON

NICHOLAS BRIGGS being modest about his achievements.
Recording took place on 16th October, 1998 in Fulham.

Things, however, are not as they should be. The weather is

been seen at the perimeters of the capital city.

With the wolves becoming ever bolder and the conditions ever

BBV 4 - "THE AIRZONE SOLUTION" by NICHOLAS BRIGGS
          (Approx. 65 mins)
          Released: ???? 1993

An environmental catastrophe looms. Toxic Air alerts are ever more
frequent and disturbing changes in the climate seem irreversible.
The government's latest solution has been to hire the services of
the Airzone Corporation. But why is the situation not improving?

Cuddly TV Weatherman Arnold Davies does not concern himself with
such weighty issues. However, unbeknown to him an ancient power is
about to turn his cosy life upside down and pitch him into a
struggle to preserve the Earth itself.

Bewildered and reluctantly teamed with an environmental activist,
Anthony Stanwick, and an infamous TV reporter, Al Dunbar, Arnie must
strive against the odds to expose a terrifying conspiracy. While,
never too far away, Dunbar's mysterious mentor, Oliver Trethewy,
          keeps a watchful eye.

Ghastly experiments, hidden agendas and questionable loyalties all
come into play before Arnie can uncover the truth about the Airzone
          Solution.

(sometimes referred to as DOCTOR WHO AND THE FORMENTORS), written
by PHILLIP (VAROS/MINDWARP) MARTIN, which proved unsuitable.
Look out for a brief cameo from BILL BAGGS as an Airzone laboratory
technician. Also, while BBV is well known for casting from well-
known actors of the past, "THE AIRZONE SOLUTION" features an
appearance by ALAN CUMMING who would go on to appear as Russian
Computer Hacker and lecherous git BORIS in the 17th James Bond
          movie, "GOLDENEYE."
